Ohio House District Three

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – As a small business owner, Kelly Wicks has been serving Northwest Ohio coffee for more than two decades. Now he’d like to serve Wood County residents as their next representative in the Ohio House of Representatives.

Wicks has filed his petitions with the county Board of Elections for the Democratic nomination for the Third House District seat. The seat is now open, as state
Representative Randy Gardner is not expected to seek re-election to the House.

“Owning a small, family business on Main Street for more than 20 years draws you into
the community in so many positive ways that you can’t help but want to give back,” said
Wicks, who runs the popular Grounds For Thought coffee shop and bookstore at 174 S.
Main St., in Bowling Green. “It’s cemented my belief that the people of Wood County
and the State of Ohio are a caring and resilient group that understands that the strength of
a community comes from its people.”

“I’ve been working to create jobs my entire adult life,” added Wicks. “And as I watch the things that have been happening in Columbus and the actions of Governor John Kasich’s administration, I could no longer ignore my desire to step up and run for office.”

Wicks points to Senate Bill 5, the voter suppression law, school funding cuts and the rejection of hundreds of millions of dollars of job creating transportation investments.

“The working people of Ohio did not cause high unemployment or this recession, and yet they are being asked to fix it. We can’t put this all on the backs of nurses, police, firefighters, and teachers and expect a solution. People have a right to collectively bargain. Our children have a right to an equal and adequate education. And the promiseswe’ve made to our seniors must be kept,” said Wicks.

Wicks’ resume of community involvement is impressive. Over the years Kelly’s been a member on the Bowling Green Human Relations Board, The Recycling Task Force, and is a past President of The Downtown Business Association. His recognitions include the
Chamber of Commerce “I Love BG” Award, which he shared with his family, the Distinguished Alumni Award from Bowling Green Schools, the Wood County Democratic Party Community Award, and honors for service and donations by Grounds for Thought too numerous to mention.

In addition to being a small business owner, Wicks is the music director of the Black Swamp Arts Festival, which will celebrate 20 years of success in 2012. Thanks to a small army of dedicated volunteers, the city administration, and a lot of hard work and creative ideas, the Black Swamp Arts Festival is one of the region’s largest events earning national recognition.

“Part of the solution can be found in the way our community supports events like the arts festival,” continued Wicks. “When people see fairness and sharing in a plan they believe has a chance for success, they will sacrifice and do what needs to be done for the
common good. We need more of that spirit. We need to be innovative, smart and fair so that when people are empowered, they will work together to strengthen their businesses, community, and our state.”

Strong support has been voiced for Mr. Wicks’ candidacy by Chris Redfern, Chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party. “Kelly is an impressive candidate. He’s in this race to win and he will do a great job representing Wood County in the Ohio House.”
